Research Experience On Chinese Medicine

Basic Research

I have initiated and/or carried out several projects related with investigation of pharmacological actions of various Chinese medicinal herbs and their products, including ginseng and ginsenosides, a range of F-CO compounds which were derived from a Chinese herbal extract. Various in vitro and in vivo techniques in laboratory animals as well as biochemical and electron microscope techniques were used. We demonstrated that nitric oxide is involved in the cardiovascular actions of ginsinosides. Since nitric oxide is a newly discovered molecular with a wide range of actions such as control of vascular functions, modulation of neurotransmission and immunoresponses this finding may provide new mechanism for the actions of certain herbs. Currently I am investigating the anticancer actions of a herbal formula on prostate cancer. This project is collaborated with Dr. M. Fabiani in the Austin Hospital of University of Melbourne, Australia. A range of modern molecular biology techniques will be used, including gene expression and immunohistochemistry for NOS and KAI1.

Chinese Medicine and Information technology

I have been interested in aspects of combination of Chinese Medicine with modern information technology. Currently I am developing a comprehensive database for Chinese medicinal herbs/products using a Structured Information Manager (SIM) system. SIM provides an SGML repository for storing and retrieving arbitrary SGML (or XML) and a number of services, including a web server for accessing that repository. It is expected a bilingual database (English and Chinese) will be developed to provide web-based updated information on Chinese herbs/products.

Profile

I have been actively involved in medical research and teaching for almost 16 years. I have developed sound knowledge and broad experience in the relevant fields. I published widely in high standard international referred journals. My research publications have been cited worldwide (>1,000 citations between 1991-1998, Scientific Citation Index, USA).
